Well, back in August 2008, I two strand twisted my hair to form what would be locs. Well, back in March, I took them out. I combined some of the twists and I felt they were too big! I may reconsider relocing in the near future, but for now, I am just enjoying my hair loose again.

I have a plethora of pics for you and I hop you like! My hair has been growing y'all! I did a mini-trim a few months ago, and it seems like it's growing even more!

I've decided to take my blog to my website. I created this blog to cut costs, but the navigation really wasn't that great. Also, some people have told me that they'd rather see one website, than go to different websites for updates. Well, I have decided to take action on those suggestions and add more pages to my site.

What a morning! Arrrrgggghhhhh!!!

Today is not a good morning for me at all. No one wants to wake up on a Saturday morning to bad news. I found out this morning that some idiot(s) stole my car last night!

Now I have to go through the hassle of calling my insurance company, possibly filling out ooogobs of paperwork, & who knows what else! Why me?

Please pray that they find my car, y'all!

You know, as much as we foster higher education in this country, one doesn't go to school or send their child to school, thinking he/she is not going to make it back home alive. That just doesn't happen here, right? Well, unfortunately, it does and at a growing rate. And as a result, over 30 people lost their lives today.

What's the problem? Who knows? People are losing their minds, perhaps? This world needs Jesus is all I'm going to say.

That's right! 2007 is THE year to make things happen!

I've always said success = opportunity + planning + preparation + luck. You can't and shouldn't always wait for opportunities to come along, if you want to be successful in life. You have to be focused, forward moving and forward thinking in your process. If not, then you'll just jumble along in life with no direction. Remember, success doesn't always mean material things either.

With that said, I had a eureka moment not too long ago regarding hair! I thought I'd share with you to see what you think!

Now over the years since I've been doing hair, about 22 years, I've had many people ask me about my hair and how did I achieve the style. Especially, when I do microbraids or sew ins for my unbeweavable sistas.

Well, I said, what better way to showcase my skills than to demonstrate it via video?

I mean I DO have a camera, although it doesn't have sound,(Boo, Nikon! ) and I do have two working hands and a head with big hair to boot. So I decided from now on that when I do a twist or braid style, that I will do a mini video, so that you too, can learn how to braid or twist.

I will post the vids to YouTube and you can find them at Nikki's YouTube.

Another thing I've been working on is my hair products. I know, I know, there are already 50-11 products that are targeted for folks with "natural" hair, but this will be different in that there won't be any derivatives of petroleum in my products and the ingedients will be natural.

I've only put this on the backburner because of school and haven't had much time to devote into formulation and whatnot. Also, I have a tendency to start a million things but only finish a few of them. But I'm going to make things happen, with God's guidance and will.

Please pray for a sista, because I need it! And stay tuned. I see BIG things happening in the future!!!!

Ok, I don't know about you, but right now I feel the music industry is über wack! I don't when was the last time I bought a CD. Why? Because most of the music is GARBAGE!

Buying a CD today is like playing spades with a bad hand. You might have 4 good songs and a possible, if that.

Well, fast forward to one of my Top 10 favorite groups, The Boys, now known as >>Suns of Light<< They are back and their music is what the industry sooooo needs right now.

"Who are The Boys?" you may ask. Well, they are the popular "boy band", if you will, from the late 80s/early 90s and had such hits as "Lucky Charm", "Dial My Heart", and "Crazy".

They stole the hearts of many a young girls back then, including myself. I wonder how many girls said Hakim was their boyfriend.

These talented brothers have grown into handsome young men. From what I've read, they have been living in Gambia for at least 10 years now and have been recording beautiful music under their new name,Suns of Light. If you haven't heard any sounds from them, check out Suns Of Light YouTube, which is chock full of vids from their career as youngins until now.

Khiry, the oldest has been working in film/production. Hakim has been producing music for the likes of R & B artists like Akon, as well as, local Gambian artists. Tajh & Bilal have been working on their solo projects and you should be hearing from them soon. Looks like they all have been on their grind!

Hakim has been in the studio. You can check him out working hard and looking good in the studio with Akon, recording "Mama Africa" for the CD Konvicted, which he [Hakim]wrote and produced.

If you ever encounter someone who is a spoiled brat, yet fun, optimistic, dynamic, energetic, pioneering, has an opinion about EVERYTHING (yes, EVERYTHING), fiesty, witty, impatient, very intelligent (how else would we have an opinion about everything?) highly motivated, easily bored, rebeillious, loves challenges, hates the word "no", free spirited, just to name a few, more than likely, this person is an Aries!

I've had many blessings come my way, even when I didn't deserve them! I have to praise God for letting me see another year on this earth.

The only black owned beauty supply store in Richmond

Hey!

I just wanted to put a plug in for the ONLY BOBSS in Richmond, VA. While that's a very good thing, it saddens me that there are not more of these type of establishments in the Richmond area or across the nation for that matter.

I went in there today and I must say it was a nice experience. I talked to the owner for a few minutes and discussed the issues that black beauty supply owners were having with trying to get into the industry. The same industry that caters to mostly black women, is one that makes it diffucult for the black women, or a black person period, to get into. Why? Because it is dominated by Koreans. Yes, I said Koreans.

How did that happen? Well, let's just say it's a 2 way problem.

First, because we, as blacks, collectively, let it happen. We faithfully patronize these establishments where the owners could give a rat's %$^ about us, treat us like dirt, and know NOTHING about black hair. Rather than giving our dollars back to our communities, we are enriching the Asian community to the detriment of our own.

Secondly, the black hair care industry is completely dominated by Koreans. From the store front to distribution. That makes it hard for a new competitor to infiltrate that particular market. I've read accounts of business owners who are non-asian, that have been given a hard time about getting products and were limited in the products they could get to sell. How's that for a fair competition?

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all about capitalism and wealth building in this country, but I'm not about wealth building via exploitation of someone else.

If you're ever in Richmond, make sure you stop by there. You'll enjoy the experience just as much as I did.

I was in Panera Bread today (I only got a salad) and the cashier ringing me up, complimented me on my hair, and said she wanted to go natural. I told her it was possible and what she needed to do to prepare herself for the transition. I also, gave her my website address.

I think more and more sistas are seeing that napptural hair IS NOT bad and that they CAN rock it with pride and confidence. I know I do and dare someone to tell me my hair isn't beautiful!

Here I am the first half of this month. I took the January twists out and left them out for a couple of weeks.

February 10- My beloved Pony Puff

February 14 -Happy Valentine's Day!
Heading to class... I washed with Suave's clarifying shampoo and deep conditioned with Dove's Advanced Therapy Shampoo. My review of the hair care products I have tried

I then added a little bit of shea butter and aloe gel and brushed the front back. I slapped a head band on and headed out the door.

February 17- I decided to put in another set of twists. Hopefully, they will last for at least 3 weeks. We'll see.

Here are my January pics!

I think someone slipped some Miracle-Gro into my hair spritzer! I can't believe this is MY hair!

Jan 11, 2007- These are week old twists. I only did them because I was sick and didn't want my hair to mat up while in the bed.

January 12-Buh-bye twists!

January 13-This is the twistout from the above twists. I had the right front side brushed up and held in place with a back comb. Cute, huh?

ETA 1-21-07: I forgot to tell y'all I got 3 compliments on this hairstyle. One was from a white guy at the MAC counter in Nordstrom. The other two were from fellow nappturals, one at the Clinique counter and another while walking through the mall. She wanted to know if I had used Miss Jessie's Buttercreme on it to get the coils throughout my head. I told her I used a little of the Garnier Fructis on it and this was the result. She had huge puff on her head and it was purdy. I may use the Garnier Fructis again, but I'm not sure yet.

January 15-Two days later after conditioning and detangling. My hair was soft.

One week later...

Jan 18- OMG! I am so in love with this style! The low pony puff!

I love this style so much, that I wore it again the next day!

I thought I'd throw this one pic in the mix. I was able to get my hair in a ponytail. It's not a long ponytail, but I was able to get it in one nonetheless.

It's been about a month since I last posted. I was really sick with the flu from New Year's weekend and have just now completely recovered.

I've also been really busy with school and trying to get a few outside projects off the ground.

Wow! The end of the year is upon us! 2007 is a little over a week away! I can say that I've had a wonderful year!

My Sister, the Twister

This post is dedicated to my younger sister, who can do a wonderful head of twists in less than an hour. One day I hope that my twists can look as good as hers.

She's younger than me, but she's taller and stronger! As most sisters do, we will argue one minute and get along like nothing happened the next!

I still love her with all my heart though.... she'll always be my little Eb.... Love ya!

Well, people... I told you I was going to try another set of twists in the near future. Well, I couldn't wait any longer. So, I put in another set last night. Once again, I got my sis to do the back for me and I finished the front. My twists look a little better this time, but not better than my sister's.

11/28/06--Day 16 Twists

What a difference 2 weeks makes! The twists were hanging in there, but they started to look dry and dusty, so I washed them and deep conditioned with Dove Advanced Care Therapy conditioner.

Well, people...These twists lasted for a total of 16 days. I say that's a good thing. I enjoyed spending no more than 5 minutes on my hair and not rushing to head out the door. I will definitely be doing another set of these twists real soon.

I spent Thankgiving at my grandmother's house this year. I always have a blast spending time with my family. I am truly thankful for the blessings I have received this year and it keeps me mindful to not take those blessings for granted.

G. Mo's Slammin' Sweet Potato Pie©

Ok, this is sooooo non-hair related, but since it's that time of the year for sweet potato pies, I thought I'd post his recipe here. Yes, I said HIM. I've had many a pie in my day, but this is one of THE best sweet potato pie recipes I have ever tried!

I don't know what it is, but if you're not careful, you'll end up eating an entire pie in one day. Don't ask me how I know.

Here's what you'll need:
2 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes
4 eggs
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon (or more... *wink*) rum or Navan vanilla cognac (or for the non-drinkers, use Rum flavoring or Rum extract)
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
3 tablespoons melted butter/margarine
1 unbaked deep dish pie crust

First off, you must boil the potatoes. I didn't mention that before because it seemed like a no-brainer, but everyone wasn't able to decipher the fact that this is the FIRST step.

After the potatoes are cooked and you've peeled them, throw them in a bowl and mixed them up, then you go ahead to the next step.

Pre-heat cha oven to like 400-425 degrees.

Pie crust preparation: take 1/2 cup of brown sugar and stick of margarine/butter and microwave together... layer the pie shell with the melted brown sugary mix and place in oven for 10 minutes at 350 or until crust browns. Do not worry about the crust bubbling, it’s going to do that. Whatever you do, do not pop it!!!!!

Mix the sweet potatoes, milk, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, eggs, butter/margarine, vanilla, liquor and lemon juice until it gets real smooth. Then pour it into the pie shell.

Bake for about 15 minutes at 400-425, then reduce heat to 300 and bake for about 45 minutes or until the filling is firm. (to check for doneness, stick a toothpick or fork in it. it should come out clean)

Take it from the oven and allow to cool for about 15 minutes.

Grab some Cool Whip, vanilla ice cream or whatever you like to add and get'cha eat on!!!!

11/14/06--Day 2 Twists

Since my sister's twists were much better than mine, I asked her last night if she could redo the front. Well, she said she would under one condition... that I remain quiet while she watched Dancing With the Stars

So I sat there reading Assata: An Autobiography, while she was twisting away. It only took about a half hour to do the top, which wasn't bad at all.

11/15/06--Day 3 Twists

Here are the results from this morning after I conditioner washed it with Pantene's Hydrating curls:
I must stay away from Krispy Kreme donuts.

Front-I wore a clip on the top to keep the front from dangling in my face all day

Side- I'm not suffering from thinning hair or hair loss, but it looks scalpy, which is expected. As the week goes on, I'm sure there will be less scalp showing.

Well, that's it for now. I thought they came out great! What do you think? I think I will keep these in for at least another week. I will probably take them down after the Thanksgiving break.

So this past weekend I decided to try some twists. The results: Splenderific!
My first twists! Yay!

What you'll need:

A clean head of hair
Holding Product (I used a little Shea butter and a tad bit of Jamaican Lime & Mango Locking Creme Wax)
A rat-tail comb
Hair clamps (to keep the hair out of the way)
A satin scarf (to tied hair down)

Now you can get to twisting!

Here I am with the first quadrant done.

Second quadrant done. Half way there!

The finished product. I admit though, a sista's arms got tired. So I got my sister to do the back for me. After further inspection, I noticed that her twists looked waaaayyyyy better than mine.

The next morning. I tied the twists down with a scarf.

It's November already! Some pixxies!!!

I had 3 classmates ask me today how did I do my wrap and how does it stay on top of my head. I told them it's an ancient Chinese secret.

Ok not really. It's actually rather simple. I've decided to add the tutorial so that you too can try the wrap.

What you'll need:

Your favorite wrap.
Holding product ( You can use a holding gel if you want, I use FOTE aloe vera gel.)
Brush

Step by Step:

1. Begin at the back with the loose ends coming to the front.
2. Bring to the front, crossing each side.
3. Bring loose ends to the back and tie.
4. Bring loose edges to the front.
5. Tuck one side of loose edges under wrap.
6. Tuck other side of loose edges under wrap
7 & 8. Push wrap back, but not too far back

There you have it! A quick puff/ wrap!

At first I thought I was hearing things when the announcer interjected the Michael Baisden Show to announce the bad news. I called everyone I know to see if they had heard it and they hadn't. When I got home it was confirmed that he had passed away. I've always been a fan of his music from Cassanova to his latest album from 2005. He will be greatly missed.

October photos! What a month! It's mid-terms already! But the semester just started! sheesh!

Oh well... please that this semester goes smoothly for me...

Me out of the shower. I washed with Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree Castile Soap and Conditioned with Suave Humectant.

On my way to class. I didn't have time to do anything to it so I just put it in a wrap.

The flash makes me forehead look 10x shiner than it really is. AAARRRGGHH! I promise that it not a scar under my right eye. I think something funny was going on with the camera or the lighting. The lightning man did it.

This is how I wear my hair at night. I was finding that my hair was matting up, especially in the back, which could lead to breakage. Don't want that!

This is me with Microbraids to give my hair a break. I was going to a wedding in NY the following week and wanted to be able to just slap in a bun. I only had these in for about 3 weeks. My head itched something terrible the last week I had them in. Hmmm...

If you're ever in Richmond during the summer, make sure you have a chance to experience Fridays at Sunset located at Kanawha Plaza in downtown Richmond. They bring an array of performers and draw a nice crowd every Friday.

Well, as I stated on my site, I decided to go natural for a few reasons.

As much as I took care of my relaxed hair, it would grow to a certain point, and then start breaking off. I would only relax my hair 4 times a hair, which averaged to every 12 weeks. Well, that wasn't enough.

I decided enough was enough. I transitioned from November 2005 to May 2006. I kept microbraids in my hair most of that time to give my hair a break. I decided May 1 was going to be the BC date. I did it and now I am happy with my decision.

Welcome to my hair blog!

Until I revamp my site, ~An Onine Journal for Natural Hair Care~ I've decided to post here as far as my hair journey.

Why am I doing this?

Well, hopefully this blog will inspire others who are contemplating going natural or have gone natural and need some encouragement, to stay natural.

All to often we are conditioned to think that nappy hair = bad hair. This is not true. The only bad hair is damaged hair; hair that has been ruined by that caustic chemical we call a relaxer. It may make our hair look straight, but we do more harm than good, by using it.

So out with the bad chemicals and in with beautiful, natural hair!
